Notorious streaming app Kodi has launched on the Xbox One, allowing users to stream video content for free on their games consoles.
The new Xbox One app looks almost identical to the Windows 10 version, although Kodi warns that it is still in the early stages of development and has “very rough edges”.
“Some parts are not even finished yet and our developers are still working on getting it up to the regular standard,” the company said in a blog post .
Kodi has made a name for itself as one of the most versatile streaming apps, because it allows users to download plug-ins and add-ons that provide free access to films, TV series and live sports events.
While many of these add-ons are perfectly legal, others provide access to so-called pirate streams, which have been illegally copied without the consent of the copyright owner.
Kodi has been at the centre of a huge campaign by copyright owners to shut down these pirate streams over the past year, which has resulted in many of the most popular add-ons disappearing from the service.
The campaign has also targeted unscrupulous retailers, who sell set-top boxes pre-loaded with third party Kodi add-ons that offer instant access to pirated content.
For Kodi, the launch on Xbox One is something of a homecoming. Originally named the Xbox Media Center (XBMC), the service was designed to allow users to watch video and TV on their games console.
But as the hardware scene evolved, other platforms were added – such as Linux, Windows, OSX, Raspberry-Pi and Android – and Xbox ended up falling by the wayside.
It was only when Microsoft announced that it would start to align all devices towards a common Windows 10 platform that Kodi decided to turn its attention back to Xbox.
The Xbox One app has been in the works since the end of 2016, and is available to download now through Windows and the Xbox Store.
“We were aware from the beginning there would be limitations when the work started however that never kept us from realising that dream of becoming once again available on the device that started it all,” said Kodi.
“It almost feels like being reborn again.”
How to download Kodi on the Xbox One
European Xbox One owners are first to receive the app, which can be installed on consoles via the Microsoft Store .
The app is a Universal Windows Program (UMP), which means there are some restrictions on how it can be used on the Xbox One console.
For example, the app will have no access to the Blu-ray drive or an attached storage drive. Network support is also limited to NFS:// shares.
Kodi warned there may also be problems with some of the add-ons you’re used to using on other platforms.
